Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane is commonly used as a filtration method to remove many types of dissolved solids (large molecules and ions) from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. 

Systems designed for reverse osmosis (RO) is based on the use of membrane elements. The systems generate a strong pressure gradient to drive water through the semi-permeable membrane contained inside the element. In this process, salts and other larger molecules are left behind in a concentrated brine stream while a purified permeate stream is produced. These systems include the necessary equipment and engineering to work in a wide variety of applications.
