MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR (MBR SYSTEM)

A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) system is a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment technology that integrates biological organic degradation (activated sludge) with physical membrane separation. MBR replaces the gravity clarifier sedimentation step of traditional activated sludge processes, using low-pressure microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane modules (typically hollow fiber or flat sheet membranes). By utilizing membrane separation, MBR systems can operate at significantly higher Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) concentrations (typically 8,000 to 12,000 mg/L) compared to conventional systems. This leads to a smaller system footprint, higher organic loading rates, and a highly purified effluent that is free of suspended solids, turbid particulates, and pathogens.

Sizing and Filtration

MBR membranes typically feature pore sizes ranging from 0.04 to 0.4 microns, effectively blocking all biological flocs, bacteria, and suspended solids.

  • Space Constraints: Ideal for factories and commercial properties with limited land for conventional aeration settling tanks.
  • High-Purity Reuse: Permeate water is of high quality and is often directly reused for cooling towers, cleaning operations, or routed to RO polishers for process loops.
  • Stable Compliance: Insulates the discharge parameters from bulking sludge issues, guaranteeing 100% compliance with DENR regulations.
  • MBR systems are widely applied in industrial plants and commercial complexes facing strict DENR compliance regulations or water reclamation goals. The permeate water produced by an MBR system is highly suitable for feed water to reverse osmosis (RO) polishing units, cooling tower makeup, or landscape irrigation.
